The valve is the heart of the faucet and controls the volume of water. There are four types of faucet valves:

Compression valves

Spherical compression valve have been in use the longest and are the least expensive type. They are identifiable by their cold water independent hot and handle their actions need to pull the handle down to close the water flow.

Compression faucets work by using a particle compression is a type of glorified screw with a washer on the end of it pressing against a valve seat.

Ball Valves

Cartridge

Cartridge faucets operate with a mobile stem cartridge that moves up and down to regulate flow. They are more identifiable by how they feel when how they are operating. Unlike a ball cock is pressed again to light, a single handle cartridge faucet operates the up / down movement to adjust the volume water and a left / right movement of the temperature.

Similarly, a mother of two handle cartridge faucet looks almost indistinguishable from a compression type washer tap. But again, you can tell the difference by how the handles feel when used.

A compression faucet requires squeeze (compress) washer to close the water flow. With a cartridge faucet, the action is smooth and consistent. When the handle reaches the off position, the faucet turns off without added pressure required as a compression faucet.

Cartridge or washerless faucets use a hollow plastic and brass cartridge insert instead of a rubber disc, which does not wear out so fast. The cartridge seals against the inside of the faucet body with O-rings. Best Value These faucets are more reliable and compression faucets.

The washerless cartridge faucet eliminates the leaks associated with washers. It also has one piece, autonomous of the Assembly. Fewer parts means that there fewer things to go wrong. Replacing the cartridge is easy ... can take place in the old and new, without the discomfort of many complex components.

Disk ceramics

This is the highest quality valve. They are identifiable by their leverage in a cylinder of width. These faucets have a housing wide two-disc cartridge ceramic slide over each other to control water flow and temperature of the mixture.

Ceramic disc valves used two fire hardened ceramic discs: a disc that moves the upper and lower fixed disk. The two discs move against each other in a shearing action, blocking water or allowing it to pass. The seal between the two discs is watertight because they are polished on the plains near perfect.

Hardened ceramic is a durable material that is virtually indestructible and are not guaranteed to perform, but is obviously much more expensive than the ball valve or compression valve. If you need to fix, cost will be higher, but the probability is near zero. For the most durable faucet to go with a solid copper base material and a ceramic disc valve.
